A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
A self-activating flood barrier includes a chamber 1 with first 3 and second 5 side walls, a dam 9, and a low-friction device to prevent jamming, e.g. roller (77, Fig. 13) or surface coated with e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE; 79, Fig. 11), positioned between the dam 9 and a side wall 3,5 when the dam 9 is deployed. The dam 9 may be wedge-shaped and inclined surfaces 15 may be provided on blocks 63 at the top of side walls 3,5. Each block 63 may be hollow, pivotally mounted to its side wall, e.g. by a hinge (65, Fig. 13), and may contain fastening means located in the hollow interior of the block, e.g. a bolt and nut (59,67, Fig. 14). The dam 9 may have a protrusion 53 and recess (35, Fig. 3). The barrier may contain secondary means for deploying the dam 9, e.g. airbags (27, Fig. 1) and compressor (31, Fig. 1), and may contain sensors for checking deployment.
