A stand-alone multipurpose lifting device 1 comprises an elongated vertical support section 2 having a planar base section 3 with an upper end comprising a substantially U-shaped receiving bearing comprising a plurality of pivot slots 5 on either side of the U-shaped bearing and an angled elongated lever arm section 6. The lever arm section 6 comprises an angle strengthening gusset 8 and a detachable extension arm and handle (10 fig.4) comprising a receiving sleeve (14 fig.4) for fitting over and receiving the end of the lever arm section 6. A multi-headed device (70 fig.20) for removing dirt and debris from a manhole cover key recess comprises an auger head (71 fig.20), a screwdriver head (72 fig.20), a splayed key head (73 fig.20) and a ball head (74 fig.20). The device is substantially in the form of an X-shape. A device (80 fig.22) for cracking a seal formed around a manhole cover comprises a horizontal cross bar section 81 comprising a bottle jack holder recess (84 fig.22), a bottle jack retaining means87,88, two opposed leg sections 82, support struts (83 fig.22) between the horizontal cross bar 81 and leg sections 82 and a jack cap section (76 fig.25,26) comprising two lifting eyes (77 fig.25,26) comprising a hook (90 fig.25,26) and lifting chains (78 fig.25,26) for attaching to a manhole lifting arm detachably connected to a manhole cover. A method for opening and lifting a manhole cover using the three devices is also claimed.
