A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Hydro-powered water distribution system
The water distribution system includes a collection tank 4 arranged to receive and store an intermittent supply of water from a natural source and provided with a first flush mechanism 5, 9, 10. A hydraulically-operated pump 34 is mounted in a distribution housing 30 to receive water from the collection tank 4, located at a higher level than the pump, via a momentum enhancement chamber 22. The preferred form of pump is a fluid pressure amplifier containing a resilient obturator member and having an exhaust outlet and a delivery outlet provided with a venturi valve. A level sensor 22 mounted within the collection tank 4 provides a hydraulic output signal via twin control pipe 23 in response to a fall in water level within the collection tank, and a hydraulically-operated control valve 35 responds to the hydraulic output signal to close the exhaust outlet and turn off the pump when the fluid level falls. The pump 34, control valve 35 and momentum enhancement chamber 22 may be contained in a distribution housing 30 which may also include other associated items such as a water treatment unit 40. The exhaust outlet may feed a low-level storage tank 36 and slow release tank 38, and the delivery outlet may supply water to a high level storage tank 42.
