A turnstile control apparatus comprises a motor M for operating a barrier, a motor driver 2, a pulse width modulation (PWM) generation means 3 for controlling the motor driver and comparator means 6, 7 for detecting failure of the motor driver or the PWM motor drive signal. The motor is preferably driven with a differential PWM system and two comparators are used to monitor the drive to the motor at the motor terminals 8, 9. In response to detection of a fault the motor may be disabled and a motor brake 14 applied.
