The structure comprises first 1 and second 2 external surfaces located on its opposite sides. In use the structure is subject to a temperature differential along an axis 125 between the first and second surfaces. The structure also comprises: at least one membrane 6 sheet located within the structure between the first and second surfaces. The membrane 6 divides the interior of the structure into several cavity layers 7, wherein the plane of the membrane sheet is disposed orthogonally to the axis such that the cavity layers formed act to inhibit convective thermal transfer along the axis. The membranes may be semi permeable and have gas located between them and the external surfaces. Also claimed is a glazing unit having two panes of glass and an optically transparent membrane, thinner than the panes, located in between the panes. Also claimed is a method of providing thermal insulation for a hollow structure. Also claimed is a modular unit where the membrane sheets are flexible and can be rolled into a compact configuration.
