A lock comprises a female element 6, which may be of two halves 14, 16, housing a lock casing 22 and latch 28 which releasably retains an axial shoulder 34 of a male element 2. The lock casing and the female element have juxtaposed faces inclined to the line 20 of engagement of the male and female elements. Preferably at least one face on the lock casing extends from the casing outwardly from the line of engagement contiguous with an inwardly facing complementary face on the female element, e.g. the female element and lock casing form a dove-tail fit. In this way longitudinal forces generated by attempted separation of the engaged male and female elements are resolved by said faces into a lateral force on the female element. The lock may be a cable lock.
