The apparatus 301 comprises a barrier 304 which magnetically engages at least two sides of an aperture 303 to prevent the passage of flood water. The barrier may have a curved outer surface 305. The apparatus may have a metal base plate 302 permanently fixed to the sides of the aperture for magnetically engaging the barrier. The base plate may comprise a vertical strip on either side of the aperture and a third strip at the base. The base plate may comprise magnetic strips either flush with or beneath the surface facing the barrier. The curved surface may extend over only an upper region of the barrier or over its entirety. The upper region may have a protruding lip. The barrier may comprise magnets embedded within it. The barrier may comprise a rigid foam material encased in a rigid waterproof coating. The aperture may be surrounding a door or an airbrick.
