A mounting arrangement 10, for supporting a hollow elongate pole or post of square cross-section, includes a base member 12 having a sleeve 20 for receiving the post, and an engagement member 22 coaxially located within the sleeve. The engagement member has a cruciform shape and is aligned so that the stems of the cruciform are angled 45° to adjacent sides of the sleeve, with the sides of the post being slidably locatable between the stems and the inner walls of the sleeve. The post may have an interference fit between the engagement and sleeve members, and the walls of the sleeve may feature slots 20. The engagement member may comprise two pieces 24,26 interconnected by corresponding slots 48,50 and can be angled 46 or stepped 76 to locate the post. The engagement member may also have tabs 44 or form part of a ground engaging spike.
