Apparatus for erecting an awning on a caravan, the caravan having a rail providing a channel for receiving an edge beading of the awning, the apparatus comprising a filament, e.g. rope 7, attachable at one end to the beading, preferably by hook and clamp (35, 37 Fig. 3) and attached at the other end to a powered means for pulling the filament towards the powered means, the filament extending through a sleeve (29, Fig. 4) , the sleeve extending, in use, between the powered means and the awning rail. The powered means may be an electrically powered winch located in a housing 1, having a spool 5, a control knob or clutch 6, a motor 2 and a wireless receiver 13 for operating the winch via remote control (6, Fig. 1). The housing may have a slot (39, Fig. 4) for guiding the rope onto the spool. There may be a coil spring 10 located between ferrules 9,11 for accommodating fluctuations in rope tension. Also claimed is a method of use.
