A composite material product such as a heat shield is described that comprises a composite material 14, and a thermally insulating material element or core 10 embedded at least partially within the composite material 14, wherein the thermally insulating material element 10 has a metallic material layer 12 provided thereon. A method of manufacture of the product is also described. The composite material may comprise a ceramic matrix composite.
