A toilet comprises a bowl 2, a flushing mechanism, a base and a seat 3. The bowl includes a rim 4 and the seat is hinged to the bowl to allow movement of the seat from a first position adjacent the rim to a second position displaced from the rim. The toilet comprises raised and lowered parts to restrict lateral movement of the seat with respect to the bowl in the first position. The raised parts may include an upstanding lip that may extend completely, or less than halfway, around the rim. The lip may extend to a height above the rim equivalent to the height of the seat in the first position. The lip may prevent movement of feet connected to the seat. Movement of the seat towards and away from the hinge may also be prevented.
