Restraint apparatus 10 for restraining a subject, for example, a person or an animal, comprises a first restraint arrangement 12 which is attachable to one part (eg a wrist or ankle) of the subject, a second restraint arrangement 14 which is attachable to another part (eg another wrist or ankle) of the subject, and a connection arrangement 16 linking the first and second restraint arrangements 12, 14. The connection arrangement 16 includes a flexible connector member 18 and a locking device 20. The locking device 20 is positionable along the flexible connector member 18 to alter the connection distance 22 between the first and the second restraint arrangements 12, 14.the locking device has a biased locking system that causes the connection member to be biased to retract into the connector member store. Also claimed is a method of using the restraints to restrain a subject.
