Access control apparatus comprising one or more barriers 1, 2 that can block or allow passage and means for detecting the presence 11 of and checking the authority 13 of a person attempting to pass in an entry direction. Exiting without authority checking is not permitted if a concurrent unauthorised entry attempt is detected. There may be a crash switch 20 for opening the barriers which is enabled if unauthorised entry attempt is not detected. The detecting means may be electronic and/or optical sensors 11, which may be in a row or array. Brake 9, 10 or lock means may be provided to prevent or allow movement of the barriers. Authorisation means may comprise devices such as cards, biometric means, or any other means. There may be means for delaying exit. Also provided is a method of emergency operation of an access control system in which exit is prevented or delayed if unauthorised entry is being attempted.
