A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The stadium 100 having a perimeter wall 10, the roof comprising a plurality of girders supported on the perimeter wall, each girder having a slat or vane 16 attached via at least one hinge, each vane connected to an adjacent vane by a connecting rod, the vane pivotable by an actuator between an open position and a closed position in which the vanes engage with the girders to form a sealed roof over a substantial portion of the stadium. The vanes may be vertical in the open position and horizontal in the closed position. A sealing material, e.g. rubber, may be located on engagement surfaces of the vanes. Vanes may comprise a pane of translucent material mounted in a frame. A single connecting rod may connect all the vanes together. The stadium may include a fixed roof portion which, together with the closable roof, completely covers the stadium.
