An animal deterrent comprising an elongate core 4 and a plurality of resiliently deformable bristles 8. The bristles extend radially outwards from the core through an angle of from 90° to 180° and are arranged along the longitudinal axis of the core in two or more groups 10. Each group is spaced from a neighbouring group to define a gap 12 between the adjacent groups of bristles, wherein each gap portion of the core contains no bristles. Preferably the core comprises two or more metallic strands twisted together and the bristle are formed from a polymeric material. Preferably securing elements, located in the gaps between the bristles, are provided for securing the deterrent, in use, to a surface.
