Viewing apparatus comprising a switchable pane
A viewing apparatus, such as a switchable glass window, having a switchable pane 110 electrically alterable between an unclear, opaque optical state and a clear, transparent optical state. The viewing apparatus has a power supply circuit (50, fig 1) to draw power from a battery, wherein the battery may be internal (62, fig 1) or external to the viewing apparatus. In an embodiment, the viewing apparatus is intended for commercial or institutional use, such as prisons or secure healthcare facilities. A portable module 160 may accommodate the battery from which the power supply circuit draws power when the module is placed into electrical connection with a primary unit housing at least of one the circuit or switchable pane. In an alternative embodiment, or in addition to the above; the power supply circuit may comprise a switched-mode power supply arranged to supply an AC voltage to the switchable pane. The power supply may also have two DC-DC converters (151, 152, fig 5).
