A water pumping device and an apparatus for protecting aquatic animals from a water pumping device
An apparatus 10 for protecting aquatic animals, particularly elver the juvenile form of the eel, from a water pumping device. The apparatus includes a screen 16 with a multiplicity of apertures of predetermined size which allow water to pass from an outer side 26 to an inner side 28 before reaching a water pump 36. There is a first sensor 30 for measuring the water level on either the inner or outer sides of the screen and a second sensor 32 for determining the difference between the water level on the inner and outer sides of said screen. The apparatus further includes a processor 34 for controlling the pumping rate of the pump by varying the rate of pumping depending on the water level measured and on the difference between the water levels. The second sensor may also be a water level sensor.
