Gusset plate and column assembly for moment resisting bi-axial beam-to-column joint connections
Gusset plate assembly 21 comprising gusset plates for holding two beams in a biaxial orientation. At least one gusset plate is configured to receive a portion of a second gusset plate therein. A joint penetration groove weld 57 joins the gusset plates together, the weld may be a partial joint penetration weld with a reinforcing fillet weld. The coupling between the plates may be the result of respective open slots in the plates for mating together the plates. Also claimed is a gusset plate assembly with the plates received in respective open slots defining interior corners and outer surfaces and welded together using penetration groove welds. The assemblies may include several more gusset plates. The assemblies are suitable for connecting beams to elongate hollow beams columns.
