A tramway system includes a track comprising running rails 22 along which trams (10, figure 1) can travel. At least part of the tramway system extends along a road in which the running rails 22 are embedded, each being adjacent to a spacer rail 24, with a gap 25 between them to accommodate the flange (20, figure 2) of a tram wheel (18, figure 2). A plurality of pneumatic tubes 32 are installed end-to-end within the gap 25, each comprising a depressible wall portion 35 alongside a running rail 22, such that the wall portion 35 is depressed when a flanged wheel rolls along that portion of the track. The pneumatic tubes 32 are sufficiently strong to substantially eliminate the hazard to pedestrians or cyclists that would otherwise be caused by the gap 25, without impeding movement of the tram. A pressure sensor (42, figure 4) may be installed in at least one of the pneumatic tubes 32. The pressure sensor provides information on the location of the tram.
