Articulating system for driving helical piers and anchors
An articulating system for connecting an auger drive with a helical anchors or drive tool. The system comprises a knuckle joint (12, Fig.3) with a forked end 18 and an eye end 22 attached to respective flanges 20, 24 and connected via a pin 30 passing through coaxial holes 26, 28, a sliding collar or sleeve 14 capable of surrounding the joint, and a guide member 16 attached to the fork end and extending through a slot 36 in the sleeve. When the slot is in a first position in the slot, the sleeve is below the pins axis of rotation and prevents movement of the joint, and in a second position the sleeve is above the axis of rotation and allows pivotal movement. Preferably, the collar is cylindrical, and the slot is arc (or helical) shaped. A further embodiment includes a handle 48 attached to the sleeve. The guide member may be coaxially aligned with the knuckle pin, and a biasing spring (50, Fig.2) may be connected between the guide member and handle.
