Access System
An access system (10, Fig. 1) for controlling access to a utility vault and/or access chamber, has an access frame (14, Fig. 2) defining an access opening (44, Fig. 3) and having a support element (24, Fig. 2). An access cover (12, Fig. 2), which may be a manhole cover, is engagable with access frame (14, Fig. 2) to cover access opening (44, Fig. 3) and access cover (12, Fig. 2) has an aperture (18, Fig. 2) therethrough along with a fastening element 16 having an elongate shaft 20 and a worm 22, which is a screw-threaded element, mounted on shaft 20. Fastening element 16 is receivable through aperture (18, Fig. 2) of access cover (12, Fig. 2) such that worm 22 contacts support element (24, Fig. 2). Fastening element 16 rotatably engages with respect to support element (24, Fig. 2) such that worm 22 provides lift to access cover (12, Fig. 2). There may be plural support (24, Fig. 2) and fastening 16 elements. Worm 22 may be releasably engagable with shaft 20 and may have a stop element 70 unitarily formed at the base of the worm 22.
