Gate hinge security apparatus 110 for use with a gate hinge assembly 80 comprising a hinge band 57 and a hook 51, the apparatus 110 includes a hinge container 112 having a body 1 which is hollow and defines an interior 116 such that in an installed condition, the body is fixed over at least a portion of the band to prevent access thereto. The container also includes an anti-lift member preferably a plate 9 which projects from the body and in use extends below the hook 51 to prevent lifting of a gate 58 off the hook 51. Preferably the security apparatus has multiple containers 1 which extend over the entire hinge band, one of which may include a storage compartment for a battery and other circuitry for operating the hinge. Joint protectors 11 may be located over the joints between the containers. The gate may be located outside, e.g. a farm gate or field gate and the apparatus stops the gate being lifted off its hinge by thieves.
