A flood defence modular wall 10 comprising at least two units 6 and at least one mounting rod 12 for each of said units. Each unit comprises a base 23 having an aperture 25 formed therein for receiving the at least one mounting rod. Each unit comprises an at least partially open top 8, side walls 16 and end walls 16’ extending upwardly from the base to define an internal volume 18. The end wall of a first unit comprises a first part of a two-part complementary locking mechanism (17a, 17b figure 3) and an end wall of a second unit comprises a second part of the two-part complementary locking mechanism. Each unit has an internal volume which is fillable with material after installation of a unit onto its at least one mounting rod.
