An automated storage and retrieval system 1 comprises a three-dimensional lattice framework 2 defining a plurality of storage bays 3. Framework 2 is formed by bolting together a plurality of frame members to form vertical stanchions 5 interconnect by horizontal beams 6. A rail network 7 extends through the framework 2. A robotic load handler 8 is movable through rail network 7 to deliver a load pallet 9 to each storage bay 3 and retrieve load pallet 9 from storage bay 3. Rail network 7 comprises an aisle 10 extending from a front to a rear of framework 2 with a plurality of spaced-apart rows 11 extending outwardly from each side of aisle 10 into lattice framework 2 alongside a row of storage bays 3 in framework 2. Rail network 7 includes rails 15, possibly with a channel, for robotic load handler 8 extending along each row 11. Each rail 15 is slidably engagable with associated mounting brackets 16 (also see fig 11) on framework 2 to mount rails 15 on framework 2 seated on spaced-apart support beams 6 of framework 2.
