A secure storage unit/safe 1 comprising at least one temperature sensor to detect a temperature above a threshold and at least one movement sensor to detect movement of the safe/unit indicative of tampering. The sensors providing signals to a controller (ECU) 8 which sends an alert to a user via a communications module. There may be a plurality of temperature and movement sensors, the movement sensor be a vibration sensor, six sensors may be provided, one each surface of the container. A tilt sensor, accelerometer, may be included. There may be three locks 7 operated by turning keys. The lock mechanism may be an electronic remotely actuated lock. The communication mobile preferable operates wirelessly, e.g. GSM providing alerts in short messaging service (SMS) or telephone call to a plurality of users. A plurality of external sensors may detect movement of a door or window to a room in which the safe is located.
