Systems and methods of constructing intake-output assemblies for water desalination plants
A desalination plant 10, and method of constructing a plant, with an intake 20 having an elongate conduit for collecting saltwater form a source W, preferably at intake filters 28, the conduit of circular cross-section for allowing pigging, a desalination facility 52, an outtake 30 having an elongate conduit for disposing of brine into the saltwater source preferably at dispenser 59, wherein the intake conduit is located within the outtake conduit, wherein the intake flow is parallel and opposite to the outtake flow within a single infrastructure tunnel 16, a terminal 22 associated with the source comprising means for diverting the intake and outtake flows. The intake pipe 66/86 may be formed of a continuous tube fed into a larger diameter co-axial outtake pipe/infrastructure tunnel 16/62/82, which may be formed form a plurality of welded sections driven underground by pipe ramming. The intake tube carrying cool salty seawater may be engulfed by the warm outtake brine, allowing heat exchange between the fluids, for efficient reverse osmosis in the plant. Additional conduits 70/90/91/92 carrying services, fibre, cables etc. to terminal 22 may also be located within outtake tube/infrastructure tunnel.
