Distributed electric vehicle charging system
A distributed electric vehicle (EV) charging system is controlled remotely using an authenticated EV charging session. The system includes: a central control module 1; at least one local charging module 18, remote from the central control module; and an infrastructure element 40. The central control module receives electricity from a power distribution network and distributes electricity to at least one charging feed. The local charging module(s) receives electricity from at least one of the local charging feeds and supplies electricity to at least one EV via a charging outlet 23. The infrastructure element is a modular edging segment (e.g. kerb (curb)) housing a hollow cabling conduit that carries the local charging feed. When charging an EV, the local charging module is identified to an authorisation system for EV charging. An authorisation signal is received at a central controller, housed in the central control module and in communication with a communications network 13. A signal is received at the local charging module that an EV has been connected to the charging outlet. In response to the authorisation signal, a central switch coupled to the local charging feed is closed to cause electricity to flow between the central control module and the local charging module and charging of the EV is initiated.
