A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
A wastewater treatment apparatus comprises a housing 2 having a settling tank 4 mounted therein to receive wastewater, a skimming device mounted in the settling tank to remove any fat, oil and grease (FOG) that settles out of the wastewater, a drain (26, Fig. 3) provided in a downstream end of the settling tank for removing water from the settling tank, an inlet end of the drain being defined by a weir 28 which controls the water level within the settling tank, and a sediment removal system adapted to remove sediment collected in the bottom of the settling tank. The apparatus can remove FOG and solid waste from wastewater, for example from a sink in a commercial kitchen. Preferably, the sediment removal system comprises a pump 60 having an inlet coupled to a sediment extraction pipe 62 extending into the settling tank. The bottom wall 61 of the settling tank may slope downwardly towards an inlet of the sediment extraction pipe. The skimming device can comprise an elongate drum 40 having a surface coated with, or formed from, a hydrophobic and oleophilic material.
