A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Improved fall arrest apparatus and method
A fall arrest apparatus for supporting a worker comprises a track 1301 and a carriage movably mounted on said track, the carriage having an upright post 1302. The upright post has a laterally extending arm or boom 1303, which can swing over an adjacent road or rail vehicle 1304 to be loaded or unloaded, e.g. a lorry, trailer or freight train parked alongside the track. A worker’s safety harness can be secured to a safety line extending from the boom 1303. As the worker moves on the vehicle or load, the carriage moves backwards and forwards along the track, and the overhead boom swings in an arc, following the worker. Preferably, two parallel rails 1301 form the track, with the carriage mounted by three wheels to each rail. The track may be mounted on an access platform with walkway (202, fig.2) or directly to the ground. Preferably, the boom can be raised, lowered and even folded down.
