Mycelium-based materials including high-performance insulation and related methods
A method comprises culturing mycelium in a target substrate inoculated with a mother spawn, producing a mixture of carbon dioxide and water which flows to a container comprising a photosynthetic species producing oxygen and then flowing this back to the target substrate producing a second mixture of carbon dioxide and water which is flowed to the container; and deactivating the mycelium. Also disclosed is a method comprising a culturing step which feeds a nutritional material that has been treated with a mixture of an acid and a peroxide to the mycelium, a method comprising colonising the target substrate with mother spawn and applying an electric field; a mycelium based material having a plurality of hyphal filaments wherein a wt% of chitin is greater than 5 wt%; a mycelium based material having a plurality of hyphal filaments mixed with a target substrate; and a mycelium based material in which a plurality of hyphal filaments is arranged to form a disordered network.
