Artificial reef for coastal protection
An artificial reef module 100 in the shape of an arch tunnel like structure having a roof 105 and two sidewalls 110, formed as a skeletal cage like framework with transverse beams defining the roof and sidewalls of the arch, and longitudinal beams, extending the length of the module and attached perpendicularly to the transverse beams. The transverse beams at the end of each module cover the longitude beams. The module may be either be formed of an electrically conductive material, such as steel rebar, or non-electrically conductive material, such as bamboo, coated in conductive ink, for use as an electrified reef, such that the frame can serve as a cathode for mineral accretion to encourage rapid coral growth. Transverse beams at each end of the module may have C-shaped profile protective end caps to prevent sharp edges. The modules may be stackable and may have an anchor attached in use. Also claimed is a modular reef made of reef components attached together to form the modules.
