Flexible bridge abutment
The abutment comprises a retaining wall 3 operable to support an embankment 7 and a column 2 operable to support a deck 5, 6 and fixed to a diaphragm beam 11. The retaining wall and column are fixed to a common foundation element 1 and the diaphragm beam is free to move with respect to the retaining wall. The diaphragm beam may be operable to support a portion of an embankment and the diaphragm beam and retaining wall may be vertically spaced apart. The retaining wall may be an open or closed section with the column being located within the section. Also disclosed is a method of constructing a flexible bridge abutment comprising the steps of fixing at least one column element and at least one retaining wall element to a foundation element and fixing a diaphragm beam to the one or more column elements such that the diaphragm beam is free to move with respect to the one or more retaining wall elements.
