Elongate body with exoskeleton
Elongate body adapted to bend in a single plane, comprising a rope 4 extending withing a succession of individual tubular elements 2 closely spaced along the rope, each element 2 having on two opposite sides of said plane an extended section engaging a recess 12 in its neighbouring element, the profiles of the section 2 and recesses 12 allowing relative rotation of adjacent elements 2 in said plane. The rope 4 may be a wire rope. The rope 4 may be a compacted wire rope. The rope 4 may comprise metallic strands wound round a helically wound metallic core. The tubular elements 2 may, on a third side perpendicular to said plane, have juxtaposed sections that restrict bending of the body in one direction in said plane. Each tubular element 2 may comprise a cut-resistant material. A section of each tubular element 2 may fixedly attach to the rope 4. There may be shims or a resin polymer filler around the rope 4 within each tubular element 2. Each tubular element 2 may be a askeletal structure or a perforated tube.
