Critical area recirculation and exhaust system
A method of converting a room (12, fig 1) to a negative pressure isolation room, the method comprises operating the room in a first (normal) operating mode (fig 3) by supplying air 54 to the room from an air handler (14) through a room supply air duct and a diffuser 24, and returning air within the room to the air handler through a room return air duct (18); and converting the room to a second negative pressure isolation operating mode (fig 4) by continuing to supply air to the room from the air handler through the room supply air duct and the diffuser, preventing air within the room from returning to the air handler, and exhausting air from the room creating a negative pressure within the room. The method is achieved using a critical area recirculation and exhaust (CARE) system comprising an airflow device 22 and fan filter unit 32. A monitor / control panel (50) connected to a controller switches the modes and a pressure sensor (48) monitors pressure in the room to assure negative pressure in the room. The room may be retrofitted with the CARE system for use in a hospital for highly infectious patients.
