Utility pole monitoring
A utility pole monitoring device 1 comprises a controller 11, one or more sensors 12-14 configured to monitor one or more parameters associated with a utility pole 2, a power supply 15, and a communication module 20 to wirelessly communicate electronic data to a remote resource connected via a public data transfer network. The parameters may comprise a tilt of the pole, an altitude of the device, a magnetic or electric field of a utility line 3, or a location of the device. The sensors may comprise a tilt sensor, an accelerometer, an altitude sensor, an electromagnetic field sensor or a GNSS device. The communication module may comprise a low-power wide-area network (LPWAN), narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT) or a CAT-M modem. The devices may be arranged on a plurality of poles in a utility network, and data received from one or more devices may be used to determine a fault condition of a given utility pole.
