System for processing food waste
An appliance (100 fig.3) for processing food waste has a min body 10 with a food waste inlet 11, a first outlet 60 for discharging compacted waste and a second outlet for discharging liquid waste. A first screw conveyor 20, having auger flights 22, 23, in a first auger chamber 21 pulls waste food through fixed blades 27 and perforated plates 24, 26. The conveyor has a spiral wall 25 which further compacts the waste as it is discharged into a second screw conveyor 30, having an auger flight 32, in auger chamber 31 which may be tapered, also having a spiral wall 35 to further compact the waste before discharging it through outlet 60 which as a spring loaded closure. The augur chambers may have apertures (29, 39 fig.4) to allow liquid egress and be encased in a liquid collection tank. Rotatable shafts 15, 16 may be belt driven by a motor 40. The waste may be discharged into a container, such as a cardboard box 50, and heated, possibly in an oven, to produce compostable material.
