Modular construction system and interconnectable block therefore
The modular construction system comprises a plurality of interconnectable blocks 302, each comprising a first 304 and a second 306 panel element (e.g., plywood). A core element 308 sandwiched between the first and second panel elements has at least one interlocking portion 320,322 which protrudes outwardly from between the panel elements. The panel elements and core element are arranged to form at least one socket 346,348 for receiving an interlocking portion of another block 202, preventing relative displacement of the blocks perpendicular to the direction in which the socket receives the interlocking portion. The core may comprise acoustic and/or thermal insulation material (e.g., low density fibreboard), and optionally a support layer (e.g., medium density fibreboard). Passageways 310 may extend through the support layer and/or first panel element. The interlocking portion and/or socket may comprise bearing surface(s) 319c extending obliquely (e.g., at 45°). A block may include a conduit, power socket, communication port, light source and/or air vent.
