A locking mechanism adapter 40 comprises a sleeve intended be received over a drive bar 30 extending from a cylinder lock 20. Preferably the adapter 40 includes a radial lug/protrusion 42 for cooperation with a lock status indicating device which may use electronic sensors or visible mechanical elements. A plurality of different adapters with radial lugs 42 at different angular positions may be provided for locking cylinders that operate at different rotations. The adapter is for use with a cylinder lock of the kind including a rotational drive bar 30 controlling rotation of a radial locking cam (26b, fig.3) The adapter may include a spring 38 to bias the adapter away from the locking cylinder housing, the adapter may include a radial flanged collar 44 locating the adapter behind a handle backplate, the collar may be complete or partial. A plurality of different drive bars 30 of varying lengths may be provided or include partial cuts 32 for re-sizing of spindle. A thumb-turn may be coupled to the sleeve 41 of the adapter. Preferably a panic switch may be actuated by axially moving the sleeve 44 which may include contact switch.
