There is disclosed a modular building unit configured to form part of a building, which is transportable to a final location for the building in a substantially assembled form. The modular building unit can comprise: an internal volume; and a self-supporting service pod positioned within the internal volume and comprising a support structure defining an internal volume of the service pod. There can be a plurality of service pods. The internal volume of each service pod can contain equipment providing one or more service function within the building. A first one of the service pods can be shaped to receive at least part of one or more further service pod. A first one of the service pods can be connected to at least one further service pod to form a service pod assembly configured to be positioned within the internal volume of the modular building unit. A first one of the service pods can provide a first service function, and a second one of the service pods a second service function which is different to the first service function. A service pod may contain equipment providing an access function between different storeys of the building. An upper modular building unit can be stacked on a lower modular building, and the upper modular building can comprise an internal volume which communicates directly with an internal volume of the lower unit, the upper and lower units each comprising respective service pods.
