PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-propelled construction machine with a machine frame and a working drum, in which values relevant to the control of an edge protector that opens downward and has height-adjustable sides can be reliably detected without requiring a complex configuration.SOLUTION: A construction machine is distinguished by a unit for determining a reference value for the height of the surface of the ground relative to a machine frame 1 on which an edge protector 5 rests in a floating position. The unit has a device for determining the height of the edge protector relative to the machine frame and the lowering speed of the edge protector. Furthermore, the construction machine comprises an evaluation unit which is configured such that the height of the edge protector relative to the machine frame is determined at the point in time at which the lowering speed of the edge protector is less than a specified limit value for the lowering speed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
