PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating for improving useful life of a substrate comprising a ceramic or a ceramic matrix composite.SOLUTION: An article 10 has a substrate 12 that includes a ceramic or a ceramic matrix composite, a bond layer 14 on the substrate 12 that includes silicon metal and a boria stabilizing agent, and at least one additional layer 16 on the bond layer, wherein the boria stabilizing agent comprises at least one of a zinc silicate, tantalum silicate, niobium silicate, molybdenum silicate, and tungsten silicate; and the substrate 12 comprises boron, boria, or a boron-containing species that oxidizes to form boria.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
