PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersant which can grind efficiently finely fine inorganic powder even in a short time and comprises a carboxylic acid type copolymer excellent in dispersion stability.SOLUTION: A dispersant for inorganic powder which comprises a polycarboxylic acid copolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 3,000 to 14,000 is provided by polymerizing a polyoxyalkylene derivative exhibited by formula (1) and maleic acid type compound (b) in the presence of a water-soluble azo type polymerization initiator: RO(AO)R...(1) (Rpresents a hydrocarbon group of 1-4C, Rpresents an unsaturated hydrocarbon of 2-5C, AO presents an oxyalkylene group of 2-3C and n is an average addition mol number of an oxyalkylene group and denotes 1 to 100).SELECTED DRAWING: None
