To provide an article storage facility and an article transport controlling method that can increase the maximum number of stored articles.SOLUTION: The controlling device sets a storage position provided on one storage shelf where both of a first transport mechanism and a second transport mechanism can transport an article to be at least one of the following: at least one retreat position of a first retreat position where, while the first transport mechanism is transporting an article between a first supporting position and a second storage position and if another article exists at a first storage position between the first supporting position and the second storage position, the first transport mechanism retreats such another article, and a second retreat position where, while the second transport mechanism is transporting an article between a second supporting position and the second storage position and if another article exists at the first storage position between the second supporting position and the second storage position, the second transport mechanism retreats such another article; and a relay position where an article is supported while the article is delivered between the first transport mechanism and the second transport mechanism.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7
