To provide a surface condition detection method which can detect predetermined surface conditions such as wavy abrasion differentiated from other factors based on image data taken by a camera capable of taking shaded images.SOLUTION: A surface condition detection method which detects predetermined damages on the surface of a to-be-detected object based on shaded image data acquired by using a camera capable of taking luminance images includes a first step of taking a moving average of the luminance values with a first number of pixels in a predetermined direction based on the shaded image data, a second step of taking a moving average of the luminance values in the same direction as the predetermined direction with a second number of pixels larger than the first number of pixels based on the shaded image data, a third step of calculating the difference between the moving average obtained in the first step and the moving average obtained in the second step, and a fourth step of calculating the standard deviation of the difference calculated in the third step.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
