To provide a universal joint in which one handrail bar can be branched into two handrail bars from the middle and the mounting angle of the handrail bar can be adjusted freely, and a free-standing handrail using a universal joint.MEANS FOR SOLVING THE PROBLEM: A disclosed universal joint used for a free-standing handrail includes: a first connecting clause; a second connecting clause; a third holder part; and a joint body for connecting each of the first connecting clause, the second connecting clause and the third holder part in three different directions. The joint body has: a flat horizontal sliding surface for coaxially supporting the first connecting clause and the second connecting clause rotatably in the horizontal direction; a flat vertical sliding surface for rotatably supporting the third holder part in the vertical direction; and a universal joint that has a receiving part for attaching to a post.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
