To provide a method for producing calcium oxide by heating treatment of a material containing calcium carbonate, wherein a time of the heating treatment is shorter than that of the conventional method.SOLUTION: A method of producing calcium oxide includes a step of decomposing calcium carbonate to produce calcium oxide by performing heating treatment of a material containing the calcium carbonate in the presence of an additive and under reduced pressure, wherein the additive is one or more selected from the group consisting of iron, iron (II) oxide, iron (II) diiron (III) oxide, iron (III) oxide, aluminium and aluminium oxide.SELECTED DRAWING: None
