To provide a water holding material having an excellent porous structure that achieves good collection and storage function and excellent water holding and evaporation.SOLUTION: A water holding material contains a porous structure. The porous structure is composed of a part or the whole of tubular particles. The tubular particle has a side wall having the porous structure composed of pores. The pores are in an approximately cylindrical shape or in an approximately polygonal shape including hexagonal or more columnar shape. The pores are open holes. The water holding material is applied to a building rooftop, a park promenade, a precinct or approach of shrines or temples.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
