SiAlON SiAlON SiAlON composite and cutting tools made thereof
The present invention relates to a SiAlON composite material having abrasion resistance and fracture toughness which are appropriate in machining heat resistant alloys (HRSA), and cutting tools made of the SiAlON composite material. A SiAlON composite material according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention comprises a SiAlON phase including an alpha SiAlON phase and a beta SiAlON phase, and an intergranular phase. The SiAlON composite material is prepared from a starting powder mixture comprising a silicon nitride powder and one or more powders which provide aluminum, oxygen, nitrogen, yttrium (Y) and erbium (Er) to the SiAlON composite material. The SiAlON composite material contains at least 90% by volume of the SiAlON phase. The beta SiAlON phase has a z value of 0.27 to 0.36. The SiAlON composite material has a thermal diffusivity of 2.4 (mm^2/sec) to 5.2(mm^2/sec). A SiAlON composite material according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention has thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity that are capable of being used in cutting tool inserts in the process of processing heat resistant alloys.
