A home appliance includes: a main body (710) having a cavity therein; a door (720) opening or closing an open front side of the cavity; an opening command input part (762) enabling a user to input a command for opening the door; an automatic opening module (10) maintaining the door (720) closed or releasing the closed state of the door (720); and a proximity sensor (764) sensing a distance from a person in front of the door. A door opening control method of the home appliance comprises the steps of: allowing the proximity sensor (764) to sense a distance from a person in front of the door; determining the distance from the person measured by the proximity sensor (764) when a user inputs a door opening command through the opening command input part (762); and allowing the automatic opening module (10) to open the door if the determined distance from the person is a normal opening distance (c2). Therefore, the method can smoothen an automatic door opening operation by controlling the operation properly.
