Disclosed are a cooking appliance and a method of controlling an automatic door opening of the cooking appliance. The disclosed method includes: a proximity detection step of allowing a proximity sensor to continuously detect whether or not a person approaches the cooking appliance; and a door opening preparation step of controlling the cooking appliance in a state in which an automatic opening module can open a door if the proximity sensor detects that the person approaches the cooking appliance. The proximity detection step includes: a first detection step of controlling the duty ratio of the proximity sensor to less than 100% if the proximity sensor does not detect that the person approaches the cooking appliance; and a second detection step of controlling the duty ratio of the proximity sensor to be a level higher than the duty ratio of the proximity sensor in the first detection step if the proximity sensor detects that the person approaches the cooking appliance. Therefore, the cooking appliance and the method of controlling the automatic door opening of the cooking appliance can improve user convenience by enabling a user to intuitively identify whether the cooking appliance can be used.
